Batman: Bad Blood is one of the DC animated films released in 2016, serving as a sequel to Batman vs. Robin and Son of Batman. This story takes us into a major crisis for the Bat-Family when Bruce Wayne mysteriously disappears, leaving his team to deal with crime in Gotham and uncover the truth behind his disappearance.

Plot Summary (No Spoilers)

The story begins when Damian Wayne (Robin) returns to Wayne Manor after training with his mother, Talia al Ghul, only to find that Bruce Wayne has vanished without a trace. Nightwing (Dick Grayson) must step into the role of Batman to maintain the secret and protect the city. Meanwhile, behind the disappearance lies a criminal organization led by Black Mask and Firefly, who are causing chaos. Additionally, Batwoman (Kate Kane) appears, having been the last person to see Batman before he disappeared. The investigation leads the heroes to discover that Batman may have been consumed by his dark side and is becoming the city's new crime lord!

Performance and Characters

Jason O'Mara returns as Batman with a strong and powerful voice, while Stuart Allan voices Damian with a childish yet stubborn and intense demeanor. Sean Maher as Nightwing does a great job, showcasing leadership and increased responsibility. But the highlight is Yvonne Strahovski, who voices Batwoman outstandingly, giving her a strong, mysterious, and detective-like charm. Morena Baccarin as Talia remains seductive and cunning as ever.

Character development in this film focuses on the Bat-Family relationships, especially Damian learning to trust others and Nightwing taking on a larger role. Meanwhile, Batwoman has her own personal issues related to Bruce, making these characters multi-dimensional and interesting.

Direction, Visuals, and Music

Director Jay Oliva, a veteran of DC animation, maintains a tight narrative and fluid action sequences. The visual style remains 2D animation with sharp lines and rich colors, especially in the exciting fight scenes, whether it's Batman battling enemies or car chases. The action is well-choreographed and utilizes each character effectively.

As for the music score, while not as outstanding as Hans Zimmer's work in live-action films, it effectively enhances the atmosphere, adding tension to investigation scenes and intensity to fight scenes. Overall, the visuals and sound meet the standards of DC Animation, which is commendable.

Editorial Analysis

Batman: Bad Blood is not just an action film; it delves into themes of 'legacy' and 'identity' of Batman. Bruce's disappearance and replacement by Nightwing raises the question: who truly deserves the bat symbol? And Batman turning villain this time challenges the idea that 'heroes can fall to the dark side,' similar to what happened in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

The film also explores the strained relationship between Damian and Bruce, including Damian having to accept that his father may not be the hero he thought. The introduction of Batwoman as a new character adds depth and opens up possibilities for the DC universe. However, the relatively short runtime (74 minutes) makes some parts feel rushed, and villains like Black Mask and Firefly are used merely as plot devices without much development.

Verdict

Batman: Bad Blood is an enjoyable and layered animated film, perfect for DC fans who love Bat-Family stories and thrilling action. Despite being a bit short and having underdeveloped villains, overall it's a worthwhile watch, especially if you're following this series.
